The HKCNDP Working Party for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders (AD/HD) was formed in 2005, with rising awareness of this condition in children, and demand in Hong Kong to address the needs of children with AD/HD and their families within the community and schools. Over the ensuing year, members shared current scientific understanding and practices. AD/HD was the featured topic at the 2006 HKCNDP annual scientific meeting, during which a liaison meeting was also held with China and regional experts in AD/HD. To address actionable issues on AD/HD in Hong Kong, subgroups within the AD/HD Working Party (AD/HD WP) were formed.

The professional review subgroup of the AD/HD WP involved members from developmental paediatrics, child neurology, child psychiatry, clinical psychology, educational psychology and teacher education. Professor Cheng Pui Wan, Dr. Hung Se Fong, Dr. Catherine Lam, Mr. Joseph Lau, Dr. Stephenie Liu, Professor Patrick Leung, Professor Shiu Ling Po, Professor Sin Kuen Fung and Dr. Tsui Kwing Wan were members of the group. This group reviewed current professional practices and manpower in Hong Kong that serves children with AD/HD, and made recommendations for future clinical, educational and community support services, professional training, and cross sector collaboration. A comprehensive review paper was prepared, and a Forum was called in March 2007, where numerous stake holders participated with enthusiastic input, culminating in a widely endorsed Position Paper on AD/HD for Hong Kong.

The scientific subgroup aimed to serve as catalyst and coordinator for inter-sectoral collaboration in research, including with academic institutions, public services, funding bodies and charities, and parents groups; and to host local and international scientific meetings in Hong Kong, and possibly in the Mainland of China, to promote scientific understanding and evidence based practice. Members included Professor Luk Siu Luen, Professor Patrick Leung, Professor Shiu Ling Po, Professor Tatia Lee, Dr. C.C. Lee and Dr. Stephenie Liu. Areas of focus included the promotion and coordination role in local research, and provision of leadership in identifying priorities. Plans for fund raising to support local research, including possibility of setting up of an ADHD Foundation, and collaboration with parent groups, were proposed.

The advocacy group worked with parents of children and young persons with AD/HD. In 2007, the Hong Kong Association for AD/HD was formed by parents of children with AD/HD, with the support of group members especially Mr. Joseph Lau, Dr. Chan Chok Wan, Dr. Hung See Fong and Dr. Shiu Ling Po, Dr. Ho Ting Pong and Ms. Chan Chiu Kuen. Since its inauguration, much work has been done by the group and its advisors to promote public awareness and attitudes, service provision, and related policy developments. In July 2007, a press conference was held by members of the advocacy subgroup together with the Hong Kong Association for AD/HD. The Position Paper on AD/HD in Hong Kong was launched at this event, which was subsequently widely distributed to academic and professional partners, stake holders, administrators and policy makers.
